Are You Taking Advantage of Call Forwarding?

Don’t forget about this simple communication-boosting tool

What Is Call Forwarding?

Call forwarding lets you forward some, or all of your incoming calls to another telephone number. You can choose to send calls to your home phone, mobile phone, or another employee or location.

This feature is helpful for most people, but it’s crucial for businesses. Your company’s phone system is one of the primary ways your customers communicate with you. It may be an important form of communication for employees too if you have remote workers or multiple locations.

Depending on your phone, you’ll have access to a few different forwarding options. They may include selective call forwarding, advanced call forwarding, busy call forwarding, remote call forwarding, and international call forwarding.

How Can Call Forwarding Benefit You?

There are several reasons to take advantage of the available call forwarding choices you have with your phone provider and equipment. The most obvious is you probably already have this feature—there’s no need to pay extra. Here are four more ways call forwarding can help your company.

  1. Flexibility and mobility are characteristics of successful, modern businesses. The ability to work from anywhere is important because customers have come to expect a consistently open line of communication. With call forwarding, employees can be reached whether they’re on their way to a meeting or on a business trip overseas.
  2. Call forwarding gives your organization a polished look. You can forward calls from several phone numbers to one primary location. This means customers can even save long-distance fees by calling a local or toll-free number. Adding an auto-attendant feature to your phone plan can make your company seem more professional. It also creates a better experience for customers by letting someone self-select their call destination.
  3. Great customer service is key to a successful business. Unanswered calls can make a bad first impression to potential customers. Current customers will be frustrated if they can’t get a hold of you or your employees. You don’t want to appear too busy, understaffed, or unwilling to help customers.
  4. Voicemail should be used only as a last resort. It lacks a personal touch and customers may hesitate to leave a message, especially if it contains private information. Not leaving a message is a big deal. They may never call back. You also won’t know what their needs are if you’re able to return their call.

What Are the Different Types of Call Forwarding?

Call forwarding is going to vary depending on your phone equipment and service provider. Contact your provider to find out if you have advanced options like remote call forwarding or global call forwarding. However, there are a few different types to look out for. There are also some basic instructions that will apply to most equipment.

You can activate call forwarding on most office phones by pressing *72 and listening for a dial tone. Then dial the destination number using 1 before the area code in long-distance US phone numbers. With this option, all inbound calls are forwarded and you can still make outgoing calls. It’s even easier to deactivate call forwarding. Simply dial *73 and listen for a tone to confirm that you’ve successfully stopped forwarded calls.

You can also have your phone calls forwarded when your line is busy. For most Frontier phones, turn on call forwarding busy by dialing *90 and adding the phone number after you hear a dial tone.

Call forward unanswered is similar to call forward busy. With no answer or unanswered forwarding, callers are only forwarded when you don’t pick up. Conditional call forwarding is a mobile feature that encompasses busy and unanswered call forwarding.

Many smartphones allow you to enable call forwarding. For example, you can access this feature on your iPhone by going to settings > phone > call forwarding. Add the forwarding number and you’re all set. Check with the manufacturer or do a quick internet search if you have another type of mobile phone.
